Imagine being a small child, listening most nights to your parents fighting, your parents anger erupting in physical violence- it is constant and seems to never stop. We at WRC offer parents and their children a worry free haven to escape the violence in their home life.  After such disruption in their world, the children are so vulnerable and we would like to share a story about one such child and the joy that Friends’ was able to support:

Daniel was 14 when he entered our shelter with his mother and 2 younger siblings.  They left with the clothes on their backs nothing more.  Daniel had missed a lot of school due to staying home to watch siblings, he had taken on the role of a parent and that showed in his behaviors at school and at home.  Daniel and his family attended counseling and other supportive services (through WRC) where Daniel’s mom was able to show that she alone was the parent and his job was to be a kid.  Daniel was able to catch up in school. For the first time in his life Daniel was given the opportunity to go to summer camp, it was here that Daniel relearned how to just be a kid again and to play.  Daniel swam, told silly stories, climbed a large climbing wall, and mastered the bow and arrow.  Daniel’s mom was able to get pictures every day of her son at camp and he had the biggest smile on his face she had ever seen.

This year, you have a unique opportunity to recreate that summer camp experience for close to 100 of our kids who reside at WRC’s housing.  Our goal is to raise $20,000 to make camp happen-throughout the school year.  It costs about $50 per week to send one of our shelter children to day camp-$500 will buy an entire summer experience for one child.

Donations can be sent via check payable to Friend of WRC mailed C/O JoAnn Bowers PO Box 2482, Vista CA 92085.  Or via the PayPal button below.  This fundraiser is replacing the Have a Heart luncheon that usually takes place in February. Please consider that in your donation. Thank you for all that you have done for our kids- we can only make it happen with you!!
