Board Functions
Governing the Women's Resource Center is a team effort between board members and the executive director.
Policy & Planning: The Board of Directors sets policy based upon WRC's Strategic Plan, which is then implemented by the Executive Director and staff. Board policies determine what the organization will do and affect the whole organization. The Board defines the agency's mission, sets goals and establishes policies. Board policies do not focus on day-to-day management issues, but rather on the "big picture."
The Executive Director of Women's Resource Center implements policy and determines an internal structure to carry out agency services.
Finances: The Board of Directors sets financial policy by adopting the agency's annual budget. The Board then monitors the financial outcomes of the budget by measuring the results of the Executive Director's spending. The Executive Director is charged with implementation of financial planning and assuring that budgetary compliance is maintained.
Supervision: The Board's relationship with staff can be sensitive. The Board of Directors supervises the Executive Director. All communication between staff and the Board should be channeled through the Executive Director.
The Executive Director is responsible for hiring, supervising, evaluating and terminating all agency staff members.
Fundraising: It is expected that Board members will participate in Women's Resource Center 's fundraising activities and events. Opportunities for this participation will vary and may include: selling tickets to special events; assisting with day-of-event activities at special events; providing the names and addresses of potential donors; and soliciting cash or in-kind donations. Each calendar year, the Board conducts an annual campaign and each Board member is expected to set a personal goal and fundraising plan to contribute to this effort.
Professional Expertise: From time to time, Board members may be asked to lend their personal expertise to assist with agency issues or concerns.
